What is Carboxymethyl Cellulose

Carboxymethyl Cellulose is a natural product derived from cellulose.It is an anionic polymer compound usually produced by reacting natural cellulose with caustic alkali and monochloroacetic acid. Its molecular weight ranges from several thousand to one million. CMC-Na is a white fibrous or granular powder, odorless, tasteless, hygroscopic, and easily dispersed in water to form a transparent colloidal solution.

Feature of Carboxymethyl Cellulose

White to light yellow powder, granular or fibrous substance, highly hygroscopic and easily soluble in water. When neutral or alkaline, the solution becomes a high viscosity liquid. Stable to drugs, light and heat.  If heated above 80℃ for a long time, the viscosity will decrease and it will be insoluble in water. Its relative density is 1.60 and the relative density of flakes is 1.59. Refractive index 1.515. It turns brown when heated to 190~205℃, and carbonizes when heated to 235~248℃. Its solubility in water depends on the degree of substitution. Insoluble in acid and alcohol, does not precipitate when exposed to salt. It is not easy to ferment, has great emulsifying power for fats and waxes, and can be stored for a long time.

Applications of 

It is widely used in the petroleum industry as well digging mud treatment agents, synthetic detergents, organic builders, textile printing and dyeing sizing agents, water-soluble colloidal tackifiers for daily chemical products, viscosity increasers and emulsifiers for the pharmaceutical industry, and tackifiers for the food industry. Thickeners, adhesives for ceramic industry, industrial pastes, sizing agents for paper industry, etc. Used as a flocculant in water treatment, mainly used in wastewater sludge treatment, it can increase the solid content of the filter cake.
