What is Copper sulfate pentahydrate

Copper sulfate pentahydrate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CuSO4·5H2O, commonly known as blue vitriol, bile vitriol or copper vitriol. It has the effects of inducing vomiting, removing putrefaction, detoxifying, and treating wind and phlegm congestion, laryngeal paralysis, epilepsy, tooth decay, aphtha, rotten eyes, and hemorrhoids, but it has certain side effects.

Feature of Copper sulfate pentahydrate

Blue transparent crystal, soluble in water, slightly soluble in dilute ethanol, insoluble in absolute ethanol.
It is very stable under normal temperature and pressure, does not deliquesce, and will gradually weather in dry air.
When heated to 45°C, it loses two molecules of crystal water; when heated to 110°C, it loses four molecules of crystal water, and is called copper sulfate monohydrate; when heated to 200°C, it loses all crystal water and becomes anhydrous.

Applications 

1. Textile mordant, agricultural pesticide, water fungicide, preservative, also used in tanning, copper electroplating, mineral processing, etc.
2.Analytical reagents, mordants and preservatives
3. Manufacture other copper salts such as cuprous cyanide, cuprous chloride, cuprous oxide and other products. In the dye industry, it is used as a copper complexing agent in the production of copper-containing monoazo dyes such as reactive brilliant blue, reactive violet, phthalocyanine blue, etc. It is also a catalyst for organic synthesis, spices and dye intermediates.
